Coaching is an art and some people have curiosity as just a part of their personality which makes them a better coach naturally than others. If you aren't naturally curious then this is a great skill to work on to become a better coach. There's lots of skills in coaching, empathy, listening, etc. But today we're going to talk about curiosity. So just think about when you were listening to somebody and asking questions, what don't I know that would be cool to know? um what don't I know that might make a difference in this conversation? We often jump to our own conclusions, suggestions from our own experiences because a lot of times we're coaching someone. We've been been there and done that or we already have an idea of what should be done. Um and instead get curious. Curious about what they've tried already. Curious about why they're thinking about it the way they're thinking about it. curious about maybe dynamics that are different in their situation than in the last time we dealt with a similar situation. Um, obviously the best way to be curious is just to ask lots of questions. Um, and sometimes it's hard to think of the questions to ask. Um, that's a great way to prep when you're heading into a conversation. Um, and you don't um, you're not naturally curious, per se. Um, brainstorm a couple questions you could ask them in advance about something you know you're going to be talking with them about. Um, try to think of something really different like go into uh your next onetoone or meeting or session like with the goal to ask a really awesome question you never thought of to ask. Like make that your number one goal and priority out of the one to one instead of looking for an outcome or result or something specific. Challenge yourself. How do you get super curious? And what is that like one really great question you're going to feel great about when you walk out of that one to one that you asked something that made that person think in a way they hadn't thought before? So spend some time today working on that curiosity skill. And if you are naturally curious, expand on it. Um you know, play into it and lean into it in a way because it's going to really create a different dynamic in your next onetoone and really help develop and empower your team member. [Music]
