I hear the words accountability, ownership quite often, right? We want our employees to take ownership. We want them to be accountable and personally responsible. And yet often I think one of the major things that leaders are missing is understanding why. What actually motivates their employees? We talk about money and salaries and bonuses and this, but what actually causes a team member to take ownership of the actions and the responsibilities they have in your business. It's not the money you pay them. It's not even that you told them it had to be done by a certain due date. It's something deeper about what actually motivates them as a person and as a human and how bought in they are to what they are doing to truly take ownership in your business to see the bigger purpose. So what is your employees why and how do you find out about it? Spend some time talking to your team members about what motivates them. Not asking questions like family, salary, etc. But what is it they love about what they do? Where did they see they make an impact through their work with you? If you can figure out what makes them tick and what they're passionate about, what they're doing in their day-to-day for you at the business, why they show up to your job. Is it just a job or are they passionate about the greater purpose behind your work or a piece of it that they really love to do each day? You can get much closer to what's making them take ownership or not take ownership. If you find out then that conversation that someone is just there because they're getting a paycheck and it's better than the last job they had, then you haven't hit their why. If you find out they absolutely love their work or they love coaching their team members, maybe it has nothing to do with your product or your company, but they just absolutely love some of their team members they're getting to develop and that's something they're passionate about. Or they love the culture and being a part of a community and your company has that community and that motivates them. or they love the purpose behind your company or the product and it has meaning to them and they're passionate about that. But if you can understand what's motivating them, what they really love about being there, then you can lean into that and get a whole lot more out of them and make them a whole lot happier because you're leaning into their passion, their interest, their purpose, and their drive. That's one way to get more ownership out of your team members. [Music]
