It's human nature to not have the tough conversations out of fear. I can't tell you how common it is that I'll be in a coaching session and end up asking the question, "What's the tough conversation you're avoiding right now? What one are you not having?" And when I ask, "What's holding you back from having it?" 99% of the time, it's fear of something. It's fear of rejection or fear that it's going to go wrong. Fear it's going to harm the relationship. fear that they'll get defensive, they'll take it the wrong way. And what I can also tell you is that when I follow up with individuals to whether or not they ended up having a conversation and face their fear, and many times they do, it usually goes way better than they thought because they got themselves in the right mindset and right headsp space to have the tough conversation. Additionally, the ones who don't have it, they start building up resentment. Um, I hear them getting frustrated and letting the frustrations and build up from month to month because they haven't dealt with whatever their gut is telling them needs to be dealt with, whatever their heart is saying really needs to happen and they're holding in feelings and emotions. Um, so I say all this to encourage you. One, if you get in the right mindset before the tough conversation, think about it as something that's important to get out so that you don't build up resentment and you think about the way to have it. Even roleplay and practice how to have it. Think through how the other person might feel. Um, what might they hear it as? How can you make sure they hear the message you need them to hear? And how can you hear and understand where they're coming from? Often in a tough conversation, the real thing is to go in with questions and curiosity, right? If something's hard and not going well, understand first where they're coming from, what's on their head, and then you can have a much better conversation than if you start with spewing out what's on your mind. Second, the other thing I want you to hear is that if you avoid it out of fear, chances are you're going to be really resentful as time goes on and it's going to build up and be a harder, tougher conversation in time. So, what conversation are you not having right now that you need to have? And what can you do to face your fear, get in the right mindset, and have it to build a better outcome and not build resentment? [Music]
