Ditch the Resolutions and Create Goals

[Music] happy New Year everyone welcome to 2023 I'm going to talk about New Year's resolutions a little bit today I'm actually not a fan of them most people probably would think I am because I talk about setting goals and changing habits and those fit nicely and with the concept of resolutions here is my concern with resolutions to be very honest resolutions are set once a year at a time where people are coming off the holidays and craziness and chaos and they're not even really their normal routines um and they're set because something changed called the calendar um not because something really is changing in their life that they want to set a goal and Achieve something but because they're supposed to think and reflect at this exact time and decide on something they want to do different at this time um and so resolutions just generally um kind of for that reason or not they're not followed through with there's no accountability to them most resolutions fail before February 1st um they're forgotten about not worked on like go to waste um and I'm more of a fan of if you want to make change do something that's going to help make real change so I am a strong believer in goal setting in goal setting that can happen in two formats one it can happen at the new year you reflect back on the last year what happened would you like what you not like and set goals for the new year matches kind of the timeline and thought process of resolutions but in a much more specific and actionable way or you can set goals at any time why does it have to be on December 31st that you set a resolution for next year um what is the meaning of that versus hey this thing happened in my life and I really want to see you change it I want to improve it I want to do better and at that time I set dates and things that are meaningful and a goal that's meaningful to me when you do it in real time the why the purpose behind it those help sit behind the goal and they create their own set of accountability within them because you have this purpose behind them real goal setting when you set a goal um when it has meaning to you is much more likely to be accomplished than oh it's December 31st I better set a goal so it's not that you can't do that and I am a big proponent of setting goals the end of the year for the next year but true sending your goal is typically when something's really irking you enough that you want to do something different about it that you want to create changes that you want to create an actionable measurable plan to do something different and hate to say it but those things that irk you to get you to do that don't necessarily happen on December 31st so New Year's resolutions they're fine but they're probably not going to get you anywhere set goals that are specific so goals that are actionable you can do something different with and you know do them at the new year do them when they come and they speak to you um and you want to make a change in your life and that can be on any given day of the year whatever day that might be so I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year I hope you've set some great goals for yourself um when those goals speak to you and and that you achieve them the time frames that you would like to achieve them Happy New Year
